Martian Legacy: The First Manned Space Flight to Mars, Their Discoveries and the Danger They Brought Home, is a new science fiction thriller written by author, Fred Lane. Critics have called Lane's book "an ingenious romp into the near future" - and he truly weaves a tale that brings the reality of Mars exploration into a believable reality. The third decade of the twenty-first century dawns with a landing on Mars where Air Force Pilot, Lieutenant Colonel Harold T...

Martian Legacy - The Red Planet Has Never Felt So Close
Jack Vance is one of the elder statesmen of Science-Fiction writing, accurately described by New York Times Magazine as 'one of American literature's most distinctive and undervalued voices.' For over fifty years, in a rich and varied career, he has contributed enormously to the field of Sci-Fi with a rich harvest of articles, reviews, short stories and novels that even failing eyesight in the early 1980s couldn't stop. A literate, inventive and playful spinner of tales his greatest works are probably the seminal 'Dying Earth' series (which in part spawned an entire sub-genre of 'end-of-time'...

Jack Vance's 'The Lyonesse Trilogy' (1983 - 1989)
In the 1970s and '80s British Sci-Fi comic '2000AD' introduced some of the most iconic stories and characters to readers of comic books, and none more so than the demonic-like alien, 'Nemesis the Warlock'. From the creative mind of writer Pat Mills, this part-space opera epic, part-political commentary, began with a one-off story told in a weekly comic strip entitled 'Terror Tube' (1980), inspired by the album 'Going Underground' by the British rock band, the Jam.

Be Pure! Be Vigilant! Behave! - 2000AD's Nemesis the Warlock (1980 - 1999)
This year has been a particularly good one for the fantasy genre and as we get ever closer to 2011 I want to highlight my pick of 2010. The recently released Ghost of Achilles - True Ogre by Chris Sorrell gets my vote for this year's best fantasy novel. As a very keen, long time fantasy fan I've got to say that after reading this I can honestly say that I've found a new 'must' read.

Ghost of Achilles - Best Fantasy of 2010?
Here is another group of imaginative stories from the Great White North. Because of the number of this volume, 13, this book focuses on horror and dark fantasy stories.

Review - Tesseracts Thirteen
As an enthusiastic Harry Potter fan, and overall fantasy genre fanatic I am always on the lookout for the next big thing or at least one that gets me excited about the prospect of sequels or the possibility of a series from the same author. I have just finished reading Ghost of Achilles - True Ogre by Chris Sorrell and felt it warranted further commentary, particularly as the Harry Potter series has now been drawn to a close. For those who have not yet read Ghost of Achilles the main storyboard plot centres on a young man named...

Ghost of Achilles - Better Than Harry Potter?
I'm going to get positively gushy about Nights of Villjamur. So consider yourself warned; employ slickers if you have to, drool may fly. Bold and outrageous claims will be made; none of them substantiated. None of them supported. Because the Nights of Villjamur is self-evident in its awesomeness.

Nights of Villjamur by Mark Charan Newton
Iain Banks, or Iain M. Banks to the Sci-Fi fraternity, was a breadth of fresh air and his first book, a disturbing, tongue-'n-cheek, twist-at-the-end chiller with at least one indelible image that this writer still finds upsetting to think about (if you've read the novel you'll probably guess the one), was a deserved best seller. Since then he has gone on to write some 12 novels, of varying success but extravagant ability, and remains one of the most highly regarded 'New Wave' of Scottish writers working today. However, so-called mainstream fiction aside, it his Science-Fiction that remains my greatest passion.

Let a Little Culture Into Your Life
Crossed is released through Avatar press, was written by the excellent Garth Ennis with artwork by Jacen Burrows. It is essentially an 'end of life as we know it' survival story. The 'crossed' of the title have been infected by a super plague which as well as marking them with a facial scar shaped liked a cross also turns them into homicidal lunatics with a penchant for rape and torture.

Rick Random, Space Detective (from the days when a man had a proper Man's name...!). Here, in glorious back and white, the 'First Detective of the Interplanetary Age' battled all sorts of villainous evil-doers on all sorts of mysterious planets.

For a man, or woman, of a certain age, the name 'Dan Dare' can still inspire a wistful sort of longing for a bygone era of Sci-Fi comics, where the good guys wore white, the bad guys black, and the world was a helluva simpler place. So it was joyous news for many of us geek reprobates way back in 2004 when cult publisher par excellent, Titan Books, announced the reissue of a whole line of classic Dan Dare adventures dating from the 1950s onwards. Here was a slew of Dare adventures...

Classic Dan Dare - Voyage to Venus Part One
This near-future story is about a bank robbery that exposes a whole lot more. In Edinburgh, Scotland of the year 2018, a high-tech company called Hayek Associates suffers a bank robbery. A senior officer of the firm panics, and calls the local police, instead of taking care of things internally.

Review - Halting State
Escapism, in all its many and manifest forms, must be one of the greatest themes in Sci-Fi and Fantasy literature. From C.S. Lewis' Narnia series to the Witchworld novels of Andre Norton, many writers have been drawn to tales which turn on the concept (or desire) to leave this Earth and journey elsewhere - usually a fantastical, magical or supernatural elsewhere.

Philip Jose Farmer's 'World of Tiers' Series
Like a chameleon changing colors to camouflage into the surroundings, Kendrew Lascelles morphs his vernacular and style to write in 13th Century English a novel of then contemporary fantasy. How and from where he taps his literary genius to create "A Child's Guide to Heresy: Or The Great Yorkshire Witch Trial of 1249" is beyond my percipience. His words have a flow and ease not at all strained yet precisely chosen to convey a world beyond ordinary imagination.

Book Review, Fantasy - Title - A Child's Guide to Heresy - Author - Kendrew Lascelles
My dear reader, I must forewarn you before it becomes too late. Before you have stumbled into a morass of inane literary criticism from which you can not extricate yourself. This review is offensive, insipid and completely devoid of intelligence.

The Somnambulist by Jonathan Barnes
About a year ago I became obsessed with the end of the world, not because I am a religious nutter more a survivalist nutter. I read countless books and watched numerous movies. Everything from Nuclear war, Zombies, Pandemic plagues, and Comet impacts to Gamma ray bursts, Peak Oil and out of Control Tectonics.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy
Today British-born author Clive Barker is chiefly noted as the creator of the Horror movie 'Hellraiser' (1987), which he scripted and directed, and its iconic pain-loving character 'Pinhead'. Though perhaps unfairly blamed (or credited) by some as the harbinger of the shallow 'torture-porn' that has defined much of the cinematic Horror genre for the last decade, Barker remains a remarkably gifted writer of Horror fiction, or perhaps more often in his case, Dark Fantasy, as well as a talented and imaginative artist and illustrator. One of his earliest works, and probably his greatest mainstream success outside...

A Stitch in Time - Clive Barker's 'Weaveworld' (1988)
American author George R.R. Martin is a remarkable writer by anyone's standards. In his time he has played in, and across, several genres, most notably with his High Fantasy epic, 'The Game of Thrones' as well as writing for movies and TV (he is the man behind many of the stories in the now barely remembered 'Beauty and the Beast' series as well as 'The New Twilight Zone').

George RR Martin's 'Fevre Dream'
This is a fun science fiction book with comic-like characters including humorous aliens that crash land on earth. There is plenty of action as well as dialog that will bring a good laugh.

Book Review - "The Coming of Marshal" by Harvey O Minnick
Frank Herbert's Dune series is considered a masterpiece by many science fiction fans. But a lot of people hate it too.

Vampires used to be considered as horrific, repulsive creatures. However, over the years, this look of the vampires has changed to handsome, young males with excellent powers of seduction. They are known for their erotic powers and their use of sexuality.

Vampires and Fiction
Many ordinary lives feel static and mundane. We all need escapism for diversion in leisure hours and fantastic fiction, science fiction and speculative fiction are in great need. Over the past 70 years so many decades of change arrived, from the Second World War to the present time. This is author Robin G Howards short biography dating the 'escape from life' periods.

Speculative Fantastic Fiction and Science Fiction - An Escape From Life and Reality
A long time ago, before the internet, before eReaders and iPads, before PDFs and webzines, people used to consume their literature in two forms - books and magazines. The former was the natural progression from the latter for many a struggling would-be author. Numerous young writers began their careers writing short stories or linked serialisations of their stories in the pages of weekly and monthly magazines.

There are some great books out there. Some of the best become mainstream and we hear about them regularly. There are, however, a select few gems that are not as well known. Here is a space aged science fiction story that once I picked up, I couldn't put down.

"Exodus of the Phoenix" by Robert Stadnik
In this relatively short sci-fi novel the reader will find everything: interstellar jumps and unknown planets, friendship and treachery, love and hate. Brave rebels will fight ruthless dictators, a brilliant mind will solve complicated mysteries and friends will turn into enemies.

"The Stars, Like Dust" by Isaac Asimov
The Inheritance Cycle was originally going to be a trilogy. However, halfway through, Christopher Paolini found that the third book was going to be well over 1000 pages and needed to be split. Thus, Inheritance Book 4 was born.

Delaney crafts a compelling finish to "The Phoenix Rebellion" with "End Game." This final installment focuses on the romance between Michael and Jackie. It is 2053 and the Soracchi have scorched the Earth, killing a majority of the population, keeping a handful of humans for their biological experiments. Will hope arrive in time?

Book Review For "End Game"
This is an anthology of new stories from Canada all about vampires, that mainstay of horror literature. In the 21st century, Vampires are people, too (so to speak).

Jabril, by D.B. Reynolds, is Book Two in the Vampires in America series. It's a paranormal romance with a strong heroine, a sensual vampire and a menacing villain who is evil in every sense of the word.

Ray Kurzweil is famous for his predictions on the future. One of his major beliefs is that in transhumanism, or a transitive state where humans begin to transform in to something more. On that subject, he has a documentary/science fiction movie named after his book, "The Singularity is Near."

Ray Kurzweil's "The Singularity is Near"
This fantasy novel is about two enemies moving toward war, with a young apprentice stuck in the middle. Tessia is a healer's apprentice in the land of Kyralia. It is a place where the only "career" for women is to become a wife and mother, so becoming a healer, on her own, is not an option.

Review - The Magician's Apprentice
I came across this book in a local bookstore. The choice of books in English in our local stores leaves something to be desired, but sometimes I manage to find a hidden gem or two.

"A Wizard of Earthsea" by Ursula K Le Guin
While the book is entitled Epiphany in Time, it may also be called Epiphany of Life. The author, as he states in the introduction, has over many years had on the air conversations with people of a variety of background on all kinds of topics. Nothing was scripted, nothing was set as a goal.

It's All in a Life - Journey to Terra Incognita, Epiphany in Time
"Lucky Starr and the Moons of Jupiter" is just one book from the series about Lucky Starr's adventures and, from my point of view, the best of them all. I have read the whole series, but never had the desire to re-read the rest of them. "Lucky Starr and the Moons of Jupiter" was one of my first books in English; I have re-read it multiple times through the years and know parts of it by heart.

"Lucky Starr and the Moons of Jupiter" by Isaac Asimov
The souls believe the process of implantation on the planet earth has almost reached the last stage and that every sign of existence of humans will be completely erased from the earth. The souls would now be free to enjoy the peace of the earth. Some humans are still there on earth, and once any rebel is discovered, the seekers promptly capture them and implant a soul within the body. The soul looks like a centipede creature which is placed within the human body once a cut has been affected on the base of the skull. The soul connects with the body right away and starts receiving the host's memories.

Book Review - The Host by Stephenie Meyer
A review and summary of the dystopian masterpiece 1984 by George Orwell: Orwell wrote this novel with the expressed intention to prevent the horrors of Fascist Germany and Stalinist Russia being repeated in developed nations like Britain and the United States. Orwell recognized that with the explosive technological advancement happening around him there was a great risk of its abuse by governments.

1984 Book Review - A Concise Review and Summary - By George Orwell
Lazarus Sheffield knew to much: secret things, forbidden things, dangerous things. He had to take sides and do it quickly in a world without tolerance: where religion was power and a free thinker was dead meat. He plotted his escape from the planet of his birth to the planet that held his birth rights - the moon. Then things got exciting.

Shadow on the Moon by Charles Lesher
Many know Adrian Phoenix for her awesome vampire series The Maker's Song. She now has begun a new series, once again centered on New Orleans and the Louisiana Bayou. This time, however, the paranormal element comes from magic and hoodoo.

Black Dust Mambo by Adrian Phoenix
This contemporary fantasy novel is about a file clerk suddenly thrust into the middle of a life-or-death battle over the future of Great Britain. Henry Lamb is the sort of average person who exemplifies the term "civil servant." One day, he is taken to the giant Ferris wheel called the London Eye, where he meets a humanoid being named Dedlock living in a tank of amniotic fluid.

Review - The Domino Men
"Miraculous Deception" is a nail-biter of a sequel to "Crucifying Angel" in the Future Imperfect series. Set in the near future in Las Vegas, Nevada, the city is a dry wasteland. The environment has been ruined and there's hardly any money to pay for public services.

Book Review For "Miraculous Deception"
Movies are ranked, why not books? There needs to be a rating, just like the movies have a rating. Why is literature less subjected to critique than the movies? Something that is written has just as much potential of having content that is too mature for some readers, and I as a parent just want a heads up.

Young Adult Books Need Ratings, Just Like Movies
Mission of Honor is the twelfth book in the Honor Harrington series by David Weber. The story takes place right after Storm in the Shadows and At All Costs. In At All Costs Honor and her eighth fleet have smashed the Havenite navy and the war between both star nations is over. The only thing left is to finally have a treaty between them. In the Talbott cluster, Admiral Michel Henke has just defeated a squadron of the Solarian navy, and the Solarians are not happy about it.

New Spin on the Rise and Fall of the Vampires - Blood Hunger Review
We see the words "fairy tale," and we automatically think of a frivolous, fluffy piece of fantasy. Scratch the surface, however, and we learn the fairy tale contains all the stuff our dreams and nightmares are made of, all the stuff of life: birth, death, love, lust, starvation, humiliation, triumph, victory and defeat.

Review of 'Fairy Tale Lust,' Edited by Kristina Wright

Intriguing books about elves and other fantasy and SiFi characters have been around for decades. In Pet Sematary, first published in 1983, the story seems simple: the hero used a sematary which can bring pets back to life to bring his son and wife back from death. But the weird behavior of these revived creatures frightened readers. They are like something as "evil spirit" that makes situations so strange.

The "Pet Sematary" From Stephen King
"Gaining Ground" is a pulse-pounding installment of The Phoenix Rebellion filled with excitement, heartbreak, and love. Set in the near future, 2053, the Areth are an alien race who have come to Earth to share their medical technology, but they soon reveal more sinister motives.

Book Review For "Gaining Ground"
Although science fiction books are highly attractive to young readers there has been a dearth of new books being published in the last five years. Here are a few books set in space sure to attract kids of various ages.

All that changes when he and his bodyguards are stranded on the jungle planet of Marduk. Between deadly predators and dangerous four armed natives they have their work cut out for them to escape the planet.

March Upcountry by David Weber and John Ringo
I have to say, this is my favorite science fiction book ever. Just last week I reread it for what must have been the fifth time. The way that the author takes a central idea, which in this case is nanotechnology, and projects it so completely into the story, is just breathtaking. Everything in the story just makes sense-it is true science fiction that takes everything that is happening in society and science today and projects it 100 years into the future. The excellent execution of hard science technology is enjoyable, but what makes the book truly thought-provoking are the characters.

Review - The Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson
This was one of the best Sookie Stackhouse books of the last few years. In it, Bill and Sookie are healing from the brief, but lethal, war between the fae and the vampires.

With pop culture's insatiable love for seeing the flesh eating undead on the big screen, it was really only a matter of time before zombies invaded classic literature as well. When I first came across Seth Grahame-Smith's "rendition" of Jane Austen's beloved romance novel Pride and Prejudice, I immediately purchased the book onsite. And I'm not a big reader of books and certainly not a big collector.

I'm a Neil Gaiman fan, and I am three quarters of the way through his book - Smoke and Mirrors. 'A collection of short stories'. And for any one interested, so far about half are pretty good ( A few I've read at least 6 times again, three of them I loved), but the rest are a bit iffy.

Space bedding is a hot matter amidst UFO fanatics. Numerous UFO fans have really gone so far as to recreate their own living areas in the same futuristic fashion which one would expect to see aboard an alien spaceship. Obviously not all aliens rest, and some have bodies which are so far eliminated from humanoid that even the notion of space bedding is one that is difficult for that alien to comprehend.

I recently read "I, Robot," a collection of short stories written by Isaac Asimov in 1950's. The movie that came out a few years ago with the same title was loosely based upon some of the themes from the stories, but did not follow any particular plot in the stories. While I did enjoy the movie, it failed, in my opinion, to capture the depth of the original writing and and themes Asimov was trying to communicate. If you don't want me to spoil it for you, stop reading now.

There are a number of gruesome deaths in this book. I won't spoil them for the reader. I will say this: the Weres come out to the world the same way the vampires did, while a separate and much more secretive group of supernaturals fights a war amongst themselves.

The Honor of the Queen is the second installment of the Honor Harrington series, by David Weber. In this book, Honor is a newly promoted Naval captain commanding her first heavy cruiser which is a far cry from the gutted light cruiser from the first book. Her new ship may be much more powerful than her last, but her main challenge in this book is diplomacy, not space combat.

There used to be a time when I hated reading. I just could not tolerate anything other than my biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics. I never liked reading novels. But then one day, I came across a novel that was written by R.L..Stine. R. L. Stine is a great writer who has written hundred of horror novels targeted for teens and adults. Most of his novels have been best sellers and he had received several awards for his contribution as well. But then at that time, I was not aware of who R.L. Stine was. I had never heard about him. Somehow I had found a novel that was written by him.

She is a strong female character (both in character and physical prowess).

Book Review For "The Phoenix Rebellion, Book 1, Revolution"
Iain M. Banks and Ray Bradbury are two very different Science-fiction writers of the 20th century, and novelists that I have actually read! I distinctly remember seeing Scottish writer Iain Banks first novel in a bargain-basement bin at Woolworths back in the late 80s.
